What is the song “Not Enough Whiskey” about?

“Yes it’s a relationship song, but not in the traditional (I’m lonely, missing you, want you back, trying to get over you) theme that so many relationship songs use.  At first glance the listener may think this is a song only from a man’s perspective, but I was careful when writing this song to make sure the song worked well from either a male or female point of view! I guess a lot of folks, whether you’re a man or a woman have that special someone in their past where they can look to them and honestly say, “there’s just not enough whiskey here to drink, to convince me to sit and listen to one more night of you telling my how wrong I am!”

“Then I have a little fun with the song when I say in the 2nd verse “not only is there not enough whiskey, but there’s not enough money down in the bank to give your lovin’ one more try!”  And of course what’s a good country song if you don’t talk about driving your pick-up truck and running out of gas? So, in the last verse I had to talk about that and of course my beloved dog that she hated! The words are “There’s not enough gas left in my truck, to turn around and bring you with me… so I’ll head on down the road, me and that dog you say you hate, and my favorite radio!  The poor dog, well of course she hated the dog!  It was my dog! Enjoy!”

Lyrics Not Enough Whiskey“, written by Doug Adkins

Not enough whiskey here to drink
To listen to another night of your preachin’
I’m sure somehow it’s all my fault,
know you got it all figured out
But I don’t care now cause I’m gone

Don’t give a damm about what you say
I  wasn’t the one who done us wrong
You were makin’ up things there in mind
Creatin’ stories all the time
Long before I moved along

There’s not enough money down in the bank
To give your lovin’ one more try
You know it really wasn’t all that good
You can find someone else… to chastize…
Now that’s a big word… let’s ride

It ain’t so hard for me to see
how you’ll better off without me
Always there to critisize
finally have your peace of mind
instead of ruinin’ what’s left of mine

Not enough gas left in my truck
Turn around and bring you with me
So I’m just headin’ on down the road
Me and that dog you say you hate
and my favorite radio

Not enough whiskey here to drink
To listen to another night of your preachin’
I’m sure somehow it’s all my fault,
know you got it all figured out
But I don’t care now cause I’m gone
… we’re outta here!

That’s all I got to say about that
Feeling better all the time!
